Dioscorea mexicana is the only member of it family from Mexico. It has the tortoise-like appearance of its African sister Dioscorea elephantipes but itscaudex only grows to 20 in. max in diameter with vines that reach more than 20 ft..
The caudex must be kept in shade but close enough to a window for its vines to find the light they need.
This can be both a summer and winter grower depending on its mood. If you notice it making new vines and leaves, water it once or twice a week in the evening. If it stops growing new vines and leaves, chill out. It wants to rest.
*Notice how D. mexicana likes looking out the window.
