They go by various names: dovecotes, culverhouses, columbaria, doocots, pigeon pads, etc. These can be free-standing structures or connected to another structure like a house or a barn, but they all serve the same basic function, to be a place where pigeons can roost in style while humans steal their eggs, poop, and progeny; but also for love, companionship and sport (see Pigeon Pat for more on this!). In fact, having a pigeon palace on one’s property was once the stuff of nobility. This in stark contrast to the general publics subjacent view of pigeons today as “rats of the sky,” (no shade to our rat friends). Heavens, we really have become an ill-mannered sort!
