In the US, legal “personhood” is granted only to humans and corporations, while natural entities such as animals, rivers, and ecosystems are considered “property” under the law. However, in some places, rivers and the ecosystems they support are finally being granted personhood (the right to exist): the Whanganui River in New Zealand, the Ganges and Yamuna Rivers in India, and the Atrato River in Colombia, because pre-extant natural waterways deserve to live and flow freely, in the same way that you and I do!
